Zen Sanuki Udon

As an udon lover, I think the food was a bit disappointing. The broth tasted slightly bitter with subtle earthy or herbal undertones. Though the udon itself tasted very fresh and chewy; the braised pork belly tasted a bit too bland.

It was my first visit, and I was in the mood for udon. Everything on the menu looked delicious, but I ultimately decided on the tempura udon with a side of tonkatsu. My friend ordered the Niku Zanmai udon, which includes sliced beef and pork belly. The service was quite pleasant—the staff were welcoming, smiling, and attentive. The atmosphere was calm and conducive to conversation.

Udon is fresh and bouncy. The sushi add-on was also very fresh. The broth is clear and authentic. However, felt the broth was too salty. The tempura also had no taste or seasoning. I think it’s not worth the price as the tempura udon was $22 and only came with one single shrimp. Wait list was 1 hour on Friday night at 7pm.

Very simple udon bar but their food is exceptional and you can expect great service from the staff. The udon itself is bouncy and not overly thick as it is hand made. Their tempura is easily the best I've had in GTA, it is not overly battered and the shrimp is fresh and chewy. I believe they use prawns and not shrimp as it is quite large and meaty. Katsu is thick and juicy. The chicken breast is slow cooked to keep its juice and tenderness.

2024 September 3.5★ Modern, bright and fresh. You'll find that the udon here is fresh and tender. Not as chewy as expected, but this is fresh and made with simple ingredients. At Zen, they believe Umami should came from taste of food in its rawest form. Our udon is made with few simple ingredients. Their udon is made from 100% Japanese flour imported from Sanuki, Kagawa prefecture - Japan, sea salt and soft water. The soup base/broth is made in-house with Kelp Fine Shaved dried Bonito and Dried Baby Sardine. No MSG. Though personally, while I enjoyed the rich umami flavors, I did find the broth a bit saltier. BUTA-KAKU UDON $23 Very good, pork was super tender. Would recommend. SET KAMO & UNAGI $40 Again, good, though the duck was more firm. With the Yuzu peels, added a nice hint of tartness. Certainly worth checking out at least once. Fresh noodles aren't always available at many restaurants.

A friend suggested I try out this Udon Restaurant, in Scarborough. Udon is made fresh daily. I ordered the Ebi-Ten Udon - noodles were good, tempura had a nice fluffy batter, but didn’t have any taste to it and broth was bland. My friend ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry Udon and it was fantastic! Big portion, the Chicken Katsu was delicious and the curry broth was the perfect complement to it all. Recommend making reservations beforehand.

Super delicious Udon. Very authentic. Polite, cheerful, lovely staff offering wonderful attentive service. You can taste the quality in their delicious broth, lots of great appetizers to choose from. Comfortable seating / atmosphere, simple minimalist decor & comforting. Book in advance a table as they do get super busy!
