Yan is a dining experience unlike any other, where innovation meets deep cultural resonance. Chef Eva Chin demonstrates exceptional talent, precision, and a heartfelt commitment to her art. Every dish is a window into her heritage, blending personal memories with rich Chinese traditions to create something truly extraordinary. Eva’s ability to harmonize textures and flavors is stunning, with each course crafted to tell a meaningful story. Her passion for food as a medium for storytelling sets her apart, and the effort she puts into research and execution is evident in every detail. The result is a thoughtful and immersive journey that feels both timeless and refreshingly new. The menu, which evolves each month, offers incredible value for the quality and artistry involved. Beyond the food, the baijiu cocktails are a revelation—each one carefully paired and flawlessly executed to complement the meal’s narrative. A unique aspect of the experience is Eva herself. She often takes the time to step into the dining space and share the inspiration behind her creations, giving guests a rare glimpse into the stories that shape her cooking. This personal connection adds a profound depth to the meal, making it more than just food—it’s a shared moment of cultural and emotional connection. Yan is a testament to Chef Eva Chin’s innovative spirit and her respect for traditional methods and ingredients. For those fortunate enough to secure a reservation, prepare to be swept away by one of Toronto’s most exceptional culinary experiences.

Truly one of the most innovative dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. Chef Eva is meticulous, talented and so dedicated. She takes so much pride in her research and in sharing her culture, family history and experiences through the food that she creates. There is so much thought put into every bite and every story. Eva is an expert in storytelling through expertly curating textures and flavors. The menu is super affordable and changes every month. If you can snag a reservation, you have to come experience YAN for yourself. The plum wine and baijiu cocktails are delectable.

I went to the last seating of 2024 on December 29th and unfortunately this tasting menu was a miss for me. We really wanted to love Chef Eva’s interpretation of her experience through Chinese food and its evolution/fusion with Canadian ingredients however there were just a few fundamental misses during this meal. Seasoning: the mala carbonara rice cakes, the drunken duck wonton and then steamed cod with chicken skin gravy were so salty that I unfortunately did not finish these courses. What’s more bizarre is that neither server asked me for feedback or asked if there was something wrong with my food which I would have been happy to share. Another small but noticeable miss was the scallop crisp course was poorly prepped. My scallop was not sliced all the way through resulting in it being difficult to be eaten the way it was intended - just lacking attention to detail on prep/plating. The fish bone broth, bread course (specifically the chili crisp and shaobing) and the eight treasure rice pudding were the only courses that stood out to us. At over $100 pp, not be able to eat half the courses was disappointing. Service: the service was very friendly but clumsy. Given the set up of long communal tables, the servers were sometimes serving customers all on the same side but then sometimes reaching across the table as well which was very awkward. The tea was lukewarm at best and several times the server would knock my arms with the teapot which thankfully wasn’t ever hot. We were celebrating our anniversary and they were kind enough to prepare a small takeaway gift box with tea and a mochi dessert which I really appreciated. Ambiance: the room was well decorated, the atmosphere was nice. Dimly lit and just inviting enough for an intimate but lively seating with other guests. Overall, it’s a B- for me because I was expecting better execution on basics like seasoning for such an expensive tasting menu.

I've followed Eva's incredible career for a few years now. Yan Dining Room was the natural next step for her, and it's incredible! I loved her storytelling to accompany each dish, and the food is spectacular. Book well in advance!

I adore Chef Eva Chin and believe she cooks Toronto's most innovative Neo-Chinese cuisine, while still honouring traditional Chinese cooking methods and ingredients. I've had her food multiple times at past restaurants and pop-ups. She tells stories through her food, personal ones and ones that tie into Chinese history, which we are lucky to hear as she enters the dining room to discuss certain courses. Yan does an 8 Course Tasting Menu with an optional baijiu pairing. Images are from their debut menu. Some of my favourite dishes include the sea bream in sweet and sour cherry sauce, lobster bisque e-fu noodles, eggplant parm, and osmanthus corn pudding dessert.

Eva thinks Congee Queen is one of the top 6 Chinese restaurants in the GTA. Can't trust her judgement when it comes to food. 1 star!

8 course meal which was divine incredible stories by chef Eva about the culture and the food. Each dish had a unique fusion. Especially the MA LA which was a chinese twist on carbonara. Thank you for a wonderful nite. Also the scallop was magical

This is the smaller dining room inside Hong Shing. I went here to celebrate my partner's recent graduation and I couldn't speak more highly of the experience. 10/10. Despite pre-paying for the service, we received EXCEPTIONAL customer service and warmth from the servers and the star of the night, chef Eva Chin. The timing of the dishes was perfect, we never felt like we were waiting OR being rushed. The cocktail pairing was excellent and matched the pace of the food. The food itself was really comforting and complex, see the pictures for a better sense of what to expect, but know the menu changes frequently!
