The Springwood

This is a proper resto that knows what they’re doing, clearly passionate about creating delectable dishes with in-season and local ingredients. This is an ‘out-of-town’ spot for me but the drive from Toronto is easy, and well worth it; I would have zero qualms recommending this Durham gem to any discerning diner. Walked in to receive warm greetings in an unfussy dining room (with delightfully quiet nods to quirk & kitsch - we love that!), with an exciting open kitchen. Our server was effervescent and made our experience special (though each person that spoke to us at the table was really lovely); thoughtful recommendations, knowledgeable with our questions, and entertaining with a few quips and anecdotes. Our group of 4 enjoyed the seafood platter (the oysters were so plump and flavourful and the scallops were so bright with a punch of lime without overwhelming acidity - their homemade mignonette was excellent with apples, too!) - a wonderful start! The homemade bread is a must and they know to pair it with a butter that comes correct; it was necessary to sop up the delicious lamb ragout from the pasta (though our only failing might have been not ordering it for each course because you definitely want to lick the plates here… but don’t, haha!). The short rib dish was excellent and needed only a spoon to share the ample piece of protein we were provided. The halibut was offensively delicious (while EVERYTHING was excellent this was probably the group favourite) and the veggies we picked - sunchokes, and beets - were freaking incredible with much attention paid to the accoutrements that made the produce shine. For those that had cocktails, they were very well crafted and balanced, delivered with appropriately pretty garnish in lovely glassware. I personally dug their spicy mag, which delivered a tart and spicy punch. Dessert menu offered ample selection and the two we tried were good. One dessert resonated as a bit (unintentionally) savoury but we enjoyed it just the same, sparking a curious and fun discussion. On the next visit we may opt to skip dessert and double down on a few more savoury items (which is simply a preference of our group and not a slight to the sweeties!). When people bask in the afterglow of the holidays, and tend to lay low during the period between Christmas and NYE, this cozy joint was full and bustling, and no doubt their NYE menu will dazzle guests. Reservations are always recommended and it’s probably a good idea to visit often to check out the latest dishes in the rotation. Cannot wait to return.

My husband and I had one of our best meals at The Springwood tonight for our anniversary. The food, ambiance, drinks and service were simply amazing. Thank you for a wonderful night. We’ll be returning indefinitely. The steak tartare was Delicious!

Wow. Just across the board, from start to finish — Wow. Whitby is lucky to have a restaurant like The Springwood. It is very apparent that a great level of care, attention and consideration is put into every aspect of the dining experience. The food is impeccable, the cocktails are expertly crafted, the service is friendly, genuine and seamless. Do yourself a favour and check them out. You will leave with a full belly and a smile on your face. We're eagerly awaiting our next visit.

I can honestly say this is one of the best dining experiences that we’ve had in Durham region. We went here on the recommendation of some friends of ours and we celebrated our anniversary. The food is outstanding. The service is incredible. The pacing is perfect. It’s cosy and comfortable. There’s nothing negative that I could say about this place. It’s our new favourite fine dining experience.

What can I say, The Springwood has met and far exceeded my "foodie" expectations. From the service, to the ambiance, to the outstanding menu, The Springwood has "hit it out of the ballpark" so to speak. Everything is top notch, the care in ingredients, the care in suppliers, the care in every aspect of this restaurant goes above and beyond. My husband and myself have been several times and every time we have been blown away. Thank you! If I was a Michelin inspector I would give them a star 100%!

This place was an absolute joy to find during a stay in Whitby. The staff there were incredibly friendly, and knowledgeable and made the entire experience an amazing time. Plates and utensils were cleared away and replaced with new ones, and the waitresses made sure there weren't any crumbs accidentally left on the surface before a delicious new plate landed in between the table during our date. The ceviche was to die for, and for anyone that's obsessed with well made butter and bread; you can't miss out on theirs!

This is hands down the best restaurant in Durham. It's honestly the best restaurant I've been to in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI. We chose to do the tasting menu and I am so happy we did. I would have NEVER ordered what we received and it was ALL mouthwatering. Chef Matthew attention to detail and the mix of flavors is absolutely superb. Plan to come back for each season menu change. Very well done!

This is one of the best restaurants I've been to in canada. The food is exceptional - its farm to table and exquisitely made. We tried a variety of menu items from the raw bar platter to steak... every single item was outstanding. This restaurant is a labor of love and it shows in everything from the food to the service. Even surprised by the excellent cocktails. We ended with some great dessert! Can't say enough good things about this place. It's a must visit if you plan for one place in durham they are the best by a long shot. I wish the owners the best of luck and all the accolades.
