Hy's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar

I booked this restaurant for our anniversary and was excited to try it out. Overall, we enjoyed most of the food, but a few aspects left us disappointed. The highlight of the meal was the food itself, which was really good. However, there were a couple of issues. The asparagus served with the Wellington was burnt to ash on the bottom. When we pointed it out to our server, Shannon, she simply took it away without any apology or offer to replace it. That felt dismissive and not up to par for the restaurant's standards. We also ordered mashed potatoes and fries as sides for our steak, thinking they were included (perhaps we misread the menu). The fries were okay—neither great nor bad—but the mashed potatoes were incredibly basic: just smashed potatoes with a bit of salt. They lacked creaminess or any real flavor, and we barely ate them. To top it off, we discovered at the end of the meal that each side was $17. While that might have been on us for not reading the menu carefully, it added to the disappointment. There were also small service issues. I requested ice in my water at the start of the meal, but it was completely forgotten. Despite these drawbacks, we did enjoy most of the food, and the ambiance was pleasant. However, service and attention to detail could definitely be improved. Overall, I’d rate the experience a 7.5/10.

The server looked like she was having a bad day. And she sure was. She kept saying things under her breath. -The salad came with no dressing and after mentioning it to server, her response was “oh it’s definitely there” when you can clearly see it’s dry, and not shiny like when dressing is applied. (By the way this my third time to Hys, but this was worst experience thus far) I asked for medium steak and I got a medium well. Very light pink in the middle. This might be a little Karen but I have to mention this. As a very high class establishment I don’t expect the sever to drop wine on the table. Especially from an expensive bottle we ordered. That was unprofessional. But like I said in the beginning. Server energy was just off putting. never going back for any future celebrations.

Ate here for the first time with my boyfriend to celebrate his birthday and this place blew our expectations out of the water. The wait staff were friendly and attentive and ensured we had the best dining experience. The French onion soup and beef Wellington were phenomenal. The chef takes pride in his craft and curated the meals to perfection - my French onion soup wasn’t to his liking and had it remade before even sending it out to the table. I have never experienced such incredible care at a restaurant before. To top it off, our experience was made that much more memorable with a complimentary sorbet desert to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. We will absolutely be coming back.

I had the prime rib burger at Hy's Steakhouse, and it was delicious! The meat was juicy and well-seasoned, and the bun was toasted perfectly. Service was also great – our server Robyn was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. I would definitely recommend this burger to anyone looking for a high-quality, satisfying meal.

My first set of oysters came out with a hair in it.. the second set of oysters came out with no hair but also no flavour. I asked for lamb and mash potatoes and they told me I couldn’t substitute what the lamb comes with… that’s was disappointing. Overall the lamb was good. The place is beautiful and my waiter tried to be as understanding as possible Also valet parking is really hard to find but it’s there on a one way side street Update: I got a reply back to my review from a lady named Charmaine (the manager of Hy’s) asking me to give her a call. I called her and she had nothing to say.. she asked me to tell her what happened when it’s clearly stated in the post.. and then she just said “sorry to hear that”…she only responded to the review to make it look like they take up/deal w bad experiences but it turns out they don’t. Oh well.

The atmosphere was like stepping into a library with comfortable sitting, lighting and live music- absolutely immaculate. The customer service was incredible, our waitress was so kind and genuinely seemed to care. But the food… I’m disappointed. The cheese toast was very basic, worse than “free bread” that other fancy places offer and you had to pay for it. The beef wellington was bland and was only medium rare at the very middle (maybe overcooked a little?) and the quality of the meat was average at best. But the dessert was a 10/10, and made the experience worth it.

This is one of my go-to steakhouses in Toronto as they have fair prices and their steak with mashed potatoes is so good. The best is the Hy’s cheese bread though! Though this time, we went for lunch and wanted to order 2 of those and a starter and a main and the server asked us to order more mains instead and called it a “light lunch”. Considering it was 11:30am and we know our portions I’d say the service was a bit uncomfy but otherwise the food was good. We also did end up following their suggestion and ordered more mains and it was too much food.
