Calypso Queen Caribbean Chinese Cuisine

Terrible customer service. Placed a large order on Uber. Three drivers attempted to pick up the order but cancelled as the restaurant was taking way too long to complete the order. Proceeded to call the restaurant to find out what time the order would be ready. The lady who answered the phone didn't even attempt to look up our order to give us an accurate time of when our order would be ready but instead just said it would be 30 minutes. After waiting another 20 minutes, the resturant cancelled our order. This is unacceptable especially after patiently waiting OVER TWO HOURS for our order to be complete only to be told it would be done in 30 minutes and then cancelled. No apologies on the restaurant's behalf either for the long wait time.

Moved to Durham from Scarborough a couple years ago and have been searching hi and low for chilli chicken that hits that special spot. I’ve passed this restaurant often, but due to the reviews specifically about the chilli chicken, I’ve passed on it. I’m so happy I finally decided to give calypso queen a try. The quality of meat as well as flavours were fantastic. The portions are surprisingly generous for the price. I ordered ahead for pick up, food was ready on time for pick up and very hot, great start! Restaurant appears very clean. One bite and wow…I have finally found my classic Scarborough comparable chili chicken. Looking forward to returning and trying more items. I suggest anyone searching for that classic chilli chicken fix to give this restaurant a try. Thankyou calypso queen!!

I saw online that Calypso Queen was highly recommended for Caribbean Chinese food so I gave it a try. We got the Calypso Queen Chow Mein, Calypso Queen Spicy Beef, Pepper Shrimp and because our order was $40+, a free order of wings too. Since this was my first time trying Caribbean Chinese food, I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the flavours and even more so the quantity/value. The dishes themselves were generous in portion size, and come with a side of white rice too. The flavours were pretty good. The beef slices was a bit tough, and the noodles were a bit more broken up than I like. The favourite was surprisingly the wings and the hot sauce they give on the side. I'll be back to try some more things.

This is a fantastic spot for Caribbean-Chinese fusion food. Our favorites include the Calypso chicken wings, pepper shrimp and fried rice. The staff is very friendly, and the food is delicious with the right amount of spice!

I was referred by a friend to try calypso queen. The food lack taste and flavor. The presentation was terrible. The menu photo of the chili chicken looked vibrant and great. What was delivered was not the same dish in the menu. The taste is 1 out 5 stars. Save your money friends. The fried rice taste like Uncle Ben's from the dollar store. Refer to pictures for comparison.

So much to unpack with this restaurant, but I will start with calling to make our order. We called around 9:50 PM (they close at 10:30 PM). We ordered our food, and over a certain amount before tax, they give you free pepper shrimp (as advertised) so we ordered: special chicken fried rice, calypso fried rice, general Tao, chili chicken and chicken wings, with a free order of pepper shrimp. They then stated they don’t do pepper shrimp anymore, only free wings. So we said we would order the pepper shrimp, and take off the wings since they’d give that to us for free. There was so much confusion around taking that off our order it was ridiculous. Finally they told us to pick up the food in 40 mins. At this point it was 10’PM and they close at 10:30. I said, don’t you close at 10:30? And they proceed to ask me what time it was. Ridiculous. Going to pick up the food, we decide to shake all that off and have a good attitude and prepare for some good food. When my husband picked up the food and brought it into the car, he checked and they didn’t give us the pepper shrimp. After going inside, they said “ oh the DJ was too loud, we didn’t hear your order”. Another absolute ridiculous reason for their terrible service. Still, coming home, we said okay let’s just enjoy the food. Unpacking the food, everything looked great. We weren’t expecting the calypso fried rice to have everything inside of it that it had. The menu had no description, but there’s chicken, beef, shrimp, and imitation crab. We weren’t a fan. It didn’t taste good in our opinion. I’m Guyanese and we have tasted and made our fair share of dishes in Durham and Scarborough. The special chicken fried rice was decent. I’d give it 3/5. The chili chicken and general Tao were absolutely terrible. It is literally ALL BATTER. It was so so terrible. Even the fried chicken is all batter. There’s barely any meat. If you’re buying meat dishes, understand you are paying for batter. You aren’t paying for the meat. The pictures I attached are after fishing through my food to find the meat. I can’t eat all that soggy batter knowing there’s no meat inside of it. I wouldn’t eat there again. Service was horrible and the food couldn’t even make up for it. Terrible terrible terrible.m Going through reviews, they have also insulted other customers leaving reviews. It’s terrible service and everything in between. You’re much better off going to Scarborough Or Zen Caribbean, where the portions may not be huge but the food is tasty and quality.

Ordered take out from here and I was pleasantly surprised. I feel like the quality and quantity is really good here. Ordered fried rice, general Tao chicken balls etc and everything was good. Keep up the great work! 4/5 🌟

Great good and amazing portions. The chicken and rice were my absolute favourite. My husband loved their jerk chicken. Very low-key and casual place, wear your stretchy pants too.
